A House Built of Wood
Posted: December 4, 2012 Filed under: Existing House (before reno) | Tags: Post and Beam, Red Cedar, Yellow Cedar Leave a commentOur house is built of wood. I mean that literally. It is all wood. How is that different from other houses? Well most of your houses have Gyproc or plaster walls. This house does not. It is all finished with cedar.
There are two types of cedar used in the house (as it exists now – before the renovation).
Yellow cedar is used for all the ceiling planks (1.75″x8″ t&g <tongue and groove>). Many of the walls are paneled in the same wood – but in 7/8″x6″ t&g. On the right are some photos of the yellow cedar used in our house.
It is worth noting that this so-called Yellow Cedar is actually a sub-species of Cypress that is indigenous to the Pacific Northwest. There is not much around any more because it is slow growing and I guess we cut it all down 50 or 60 years ago … but at least I now know why one of the mountains next to us is named Cypress mountain (not too much Yellow Cedar left there though).
